Medicare Supplement Plan G vs Plan N

The two Medigap plans most people choose today, what each leaves you to pay, and how to decide.

Since 2020, people new to Medicare cannot buy Plan C or Plan F, which leaves Plan G as the most complete Supplement and Plan N as the value pick. Benefits are standardized by law, so a Plan G from one carrier pays exactly what a Plan G from another pays. Only the premium differs.

What Plan G covers

Everything Original Medicare leaves behind except the annual Part B deductible. After you meet that deductible once a year, Plan G pays your Part A and Part B coinsurance, the Part A deductible, skilled nursing coinsurance, Part B excess charges, and foreign travel emergencies. In practice your medical bills for the year are the Part B deductible and nothing else.

What Plan N covers

The same list, with three differences. You pay a copay of up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not end in admission. And Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges, the up-to-15-percent extra a non-participating doctor can bill in some states.

How to decide

  • Take the annual premium difference between G and N at the carriers in your ZIP code.
  • Estimate your office visits for the year. Ten visits at $20 is $200.
  • If the premium gap is bigger than the copays you expect, N wins. If you see specialists often, G usually wins.
  • Check whether your state bans excess charges. Several do, which removes that Plan N risk entirely.

Two things people miss

  • Plan N premiums tend to rise more slowly than Plan G over time, because the copays keep the risk pool healthier. The gap often widens in N's favor.
  • You can switch plans later, but outside your open enrollment window most states let the carrier ask health questions. Choose with that in mind.
